Description

– May 21, 1986), Aunty Mary Kawena Puku'i was a Hawaiian scholar, dancer, composer, and educator. She was a part of my hula lineage thru my Kumu Charles K Jr Kaupu, and 'ohana to my hānai sister Laticia Castellanos. Orphaned at birth on Kaua'i island, Pat Namaka Bacon was adopted by Henry and Pa'ahana Wiggin at eight weeks old. She was then given to their daughter, Aunty Mary Kawena Pukui, who became her hānai (adopted) mother and lifelong companion. Solid yellow on 3", lighter toward the end of petals, good textured, all white on the back of petal, tight buds are light green, spicy fragrant. Very distinctive appearance, the scent reminds me of spring bulbs, like daffodil or hyacinth, and the creamy color palate is reminiscent of the same. Mary Robinson Foster #340 JL 4" pink with orange center and light veining. Large overlapped reddish flowers blended with light pink. Slight orange center. Very showy. Medium pink 4-5" with slightly upturned inner edges and small orange center. Wide elliptical petals have light pink veins and are moderately overlapped with rounded tips, medium sweet fragrance. Flower stalk is reddish brown and upright. Pink bands on reverse of petals. Average keeping quality, with low tendency to fade, average growth habit and good branching. Medium green elliptical leaves with acuminate tips. A seedling of unknown origin named in honor of Mary Robinson Foster, the founder of the Foster Botanical Gardens in Honolulu Hawaii, who generously donated Foster Botanical Gardens to the city of Honolulu.
