Description
This entry describes a cultivar (partial name ‘2000’) with deep pink to maroon-pink buds that open into 3 to 3.5-inch star-shaped flowers in white and yellow with shades of pink and a red-orange throat. Petals slightly overlap, and flowers sometimes produce six petals. The fragrance is strong, fresh, and spicy-lemon, likened to the taste of a very sweet lychee, and is considered one of the most intensely fragrant varieties. The burnt-orange throat intensifies with heat and is strongest more than a day after opening. Larger flowers reach 3.5 to 4 inches with the same strong spice-and-lemon fragrance. Heat and humidity are needed for the center star to develop fully. Leaves are elliptical with pointed tips, large, and thick. Growth is described variably as a small slow tree or, in a related note, upright, fast-growing, tall, and lanky. A related note references Fireblast, which has a much larger center than the comparable Chiang Mai Rainbow and an intense rose scent.
