Anecdotal Notes
Duvachelle was named after an Alice Duvachelle in Kauai. Originated on the island of Kauai and is named for Alice Kealaula Duvauchelle of Koloa Kauai. It was brought to Oahu by Gloria Schmidt. Per Dr. Criley: She (Gloria Schmidt) also told us that the Duvauchelle (Duvauchelle Red) was a unique red-colored plumeria owned by the family of that name on Kauai who rarely parted with cuttings. She said she climbed over a fence to take a cutting. Our plant was acquired from Mrs. Schmidt. In more recent years, I understand, Josephine Duvauchelle has shared cuttings with mainlanders who sought her out to ask for cuttings. Rich colored 3” velvet red with pointed petals that slightly overlap. Slight sweet fragrance with a fair to good keeping quality. The foliage is a deep reddish green color. The tree is rarely found on any of the islands and was once was thought to be extinct. Extremely slow growing. Very beautiful foliage. Roots well. Velvety red with the same color front and back. It prefers partial sun (as most reds) and does very well in the Houston area when one doesn't feed too much nitrogen. I don't find it more difficult to root than any of the reds. Very slender branches. The cuttings root fairly easily, but they all have that slender almost lanky growth habit. Duvauchelle Dwarf best red/cerise but also a true dwarf/semi dwarf tree and lovely foliage. No yellow in center, completely cerise /red. All frangipanis with the cerise coloration genes have by the sweetest fruitiest perfume. The perfume is superb. Bluish leaves. Nicely shaped compact semi dwarf tree with lovely foliage. Semi dwarf tree 3m x 3m with lovely purple tinged foliage. Deep dark red, light sweet scent.
