Description

Golden Ray (distinct from Sai Thong) produces 6-inch fiery orange flowers whose colors intensify with heat and humidity, and is known for a very strong, sweet fragrance similar to Scott Pratt. It is temperamental and finicky, a slow grower prone to black tip at around 40 degrees, dropping inflorescences when young, and can be difficult to keep alive until it develops good roots. When established it blooms prolifically with huge flowers. The wood is unusual with a yellow knobby trunk; the plant is less leggy than Sai Thong but blooms less profusely. Its growth habit improves with age. The mother tree died in the 2010 Thai floods.
