Description
JJ Thailand, also discussed as CA Sunset, is a seedling of Penang Peach. Flowers are 2 to 4 inches with thick petals and excellent keeping quality. Color shifts with temperature: light yellow infused with light pink or pale yellow in cooler weather, deepening to strong yellow combined with deep pink, salmon, orange, and red as the weather heats up. Petals show an apricot-peach body, yellow coloration, a pale pink splash band on one side, and a medium pink line on the edge. Leaves are pronounced with hooked tips. Fragrance is variable—described as peachy, buttery, or, to some, reminiscent of coconut suntan lotion. It is a semi-compact, cold-tolerant grower recommended for coastal areas; an incredible bloomer with large clusters and a very long bloom season. It can rebloom on the previous year’s inflorescences, its branching becomes shorter over time, and it roots easily. CA Sunset’s blooms, leaves, and scent are very similar to its mother Penang Peach, and young plants can be mistaken for each other; mature CA Sunset is more compact and branches and blooms more frequently than Penang Peach. Sets seed. The cultivar should not be pruned more than every three years, or the plant will decline.
Appearance
2 to 4-inch thick-petaled blooms in sunset colors: apricot-peach or yellow, with a pale pink splash band on one side and a medium pink line along the edge. Color deepens with heat from yellow and pink to dark orange, red, pink, and salmon. Leaves have pronounced hooked tips.
Bloom
Incredible bloomer with large clusters over a very long bloom season; can rebloom on the previous year’s inflorescences. Early spring flowers open yellow, and darken through summer heat.
Fragrance
Peachy or buttery; some detect coconut suntan-lotion notes.

Cultivation Tips
