Description

Officially known as Cooktown Queen (Sacred Gardens), Wishy Washy is an Australian cultivar originating from a single large tree in a riverside park in Cooktown, Queensland, named by the late Marilyn Vanderbergh. The name refers to its temperature-driven color changes: flowers opening in warmer weather are deep, sizzling pink with a swirl of gold, orange, and red at the center, while those opening in cooler weather are pastel. On days of fluctuating weather, blooms of varying color appear together on the same inflorescence. Flowers are 3.5-4 inches (also described as 3 inches) in yellow, pink, and multicolor tones and carry a sweet, medium-strong rose scent reminiscent of Pond's Cold Cream. A distinctive feature is how the petals are separated at the tube, and a dark orange stripe appears to one side of each petal's center. The plant is a tall, medium-sized tree with upright, wide, and spreading growth, dense clusters, and profuse early blooming.

Appearance

Petals are white, yellow, and cerise with a yellow center and an orange stripe to one side; pink, cerise, or white on the outer 60% of the petal, varying by temperature. Backs show a fine yellow line fading to white, then a thick band of pink, with slight veining. Petals are distinctively separated at the tube, and a dark orange stripe to one side of each petal's center is unusual. Buds are pink.

Bloom

Reasonably dense clusters, free-flowering and profuse early bloomer. Flowers measure 3.5-4 inches (also noted at 3 inches). Color varies within a single inflorescence in fluctuating weather.

Fragrance

Sweet, medium-strong rose scent reminiscent of Pond's Cold Cream.

Growth & Foliage

Tall, medium tree with upright, wide, and spreading growth. Acuminate, elliptic, mid-green leaves with pointed tips and no overlap, showing green veins with a red leaf edge; petiole green/brown and glabrous.

Cultivation Tips

Easy to root.
