Aki Red

Colors
PurpleRedPink

Description

Aki Red produces 4 inch true red flowers with a yellowish center and subtle purple edging, though color intensity varies with climate. In cooler coastal areas it may appear less red, while in hotter inland locations it can look almost black. Petal texture varies with weather, becoming thicker and narrower in heat and more relaxed and wider in normal temperatures. It has a spicy scent suggestive of cinnamon or nutmeg, and roots easily. The tree is tall and fast growing and is recommended for coastal climates. Possibly the same as Feto Red.

True red 4 inch flowers with a yellowish center and difficult-to-capture purple edging. In extreme heat, the flowers can appear almost black. Texture changes with weather, thicker and narrower in heat, more relaxed and wider in normal temperatures.

Fragrance

Pleasant and spicy, with notes of cinnamon or nutmeg; also compared to rose and lily.

Growth & Foliage

Tall and fast growing.

Cultivation Tips

Does not need heat to develop color, making it well suited to coastal climates. Easy to root.

Provenance

An unidentified plumeria D. Konishi named for his father. His father, Raymond Akitoshi Konishi, brought a truckload of red cuttings from Harbor City, California, in the 1980s and grafted them onto Celadine using black electric tape. Possibly the same as Feto Red.
