Description
Barbara Randolph was originally a large plumeria found in Barbados in the early 1980s, from the biggest tree the finders had ever seen, growing in a cemetery. Flowers are 3.5 to 4 inches with prominent tones of pink, orange, and gold: a pink base with a moderate bright yellow center and strong bright pink outer banding on front and back. Petals are long, elliptical, slightly overlapping with good texture, upturned inner edges with a slight twist that curls back, and pointed tips. Fragrance is light and sweet, with a high tendency to fade. It is a strong upright grower, medium tall, carrying nice-sized inflorescences. Color and size diminish in cooler weather, so the plant needs heat to look its best. It sets seed. A separate 2012 F2 seedling of P. pudica from Florida Colors Nursery, also named Barbara Hoak (widow of horticulturist Joe Hoak of South Florida), produces very large frangipani-scented flowers that are white with a light pink edge on the underside and has large rust-free leaves. This seedling is intended for further breeding with dark red pollen in the tradition of Bill Moragne.
