Description

Originating from Thailand, Celadine (PSA #191) is a highly popular cultivar and ranks at the very top of the list for its fragrance. This classic variety is easy to grow, very vigorous, yet maintains a compact growth habit with thick branching. The tree is exceptionally floriferous, producing heavy, tight flower clusters early in the season. Its glossy lime-green leaves feature a distinct light red border and a remarkably rigid texture. Notably, the leaf margin is wider than that of most plumerias, creating a striking double-ridge outline. The leaf petiole is primarily green with a subtle hint of red. Celadine reliably sets seed and is unique in its ability to bloom on the previous year's inflorescences.

Appearance

The blossoms are medium to large, measuring 3.5 inches in diameter. They feature a brilliant, large yellow center framed by a broad white margin. The narrow, firm-textured petals have pointed tips and are slightly overlapping. The foliage consists of glossy green leaves with a light red border and a highly rigid texture.

Bloom

Celadine is one of the most floriferous plumeria cultivars, known for being an early bloomer that produces heavy, tight clusters. It has the unique ability to bloom on the previous year's inflorescences.

Fragrance

Widely considered the most desirable plumeria for fragrance, it emits a strong, sweet, classic plumeria scent blended with a distinct lemon-and-citrus suntan lotion aroma.

Growth & Foliage

This cultivar is a vigorous grower with a medium, compact habit characterized by thick branching and upright green stalks. The stems are smooth and green with a reddish hue. The distinctive lime-green leaves are acuminate (pointed) and rigid.

Cultivation Tips

Rooting & Grafting: Cuttings are incredibly hearty and root very easily, making it a fast grower and a generous bloomer. It also serves as an excellent host for grafting. Environmental Tolerances: The tree is notably cold-tolerant, but it is highly sensitive to soil compaction. Vulnerabilities: It can be susceptible to powdery mildew, so proper air circulation is recommended. Keeping Quality: The firm-textured flowers boast exceptional longevity, maintaining lei-quality freshness for over 11 days.
