Lava Flow Jim
Colors
PinkRedOrangeYellow
Description
Spotted by Jim Little's son Clark near Pearl Harbor, possibly one of Gloria Schmidt's seedlings. Produces glowing 3" flowers with a lava-colored reddish-orange center flowing out through pink veins onto bright yellow-orange to peach-colored petals. The petal reverse is streaked with a red-orange stripe. Petal thickness and color balance vary with weather and soil: mostly yellow in cooler conditions, shifting to solid reddish-orange above 98°F. Some plants are disappointingly plain. Fragrance is strong, rose-like. A compact grower with large, full flower heads and huge leaves, cold-sensitive, easy to root and graft, and a fast grower. Other growth reports describe it as slow, tending to nub, and fussy about blooming, but once established it blooms well. Sets seed.
