Description

Monroe Birdsey is one of the most common and vigorous plumeria trees in the Miami area and the Florida Keys, named many years ago by a University of Miami professor. It is an easy and fast rooter with thick branching, generous blooms, and hardy character, often reaching over 20 feet tall. It has been growing in South Florida for more than 50 years, predating claims of hybridization by Stokes, and is more cold-hardy than Vera Cruz Rose. Tips often bloom multiple times without branching, producing long-lasting inflorescences. It sets seed in large pods.

Appearance

Deep rose-pink flowers with a yellow center and red stems. Stems can be as thick as Jeannie Moragne with similarly large leaves.

Bloom

Generous, prolific bloomer with near-continuous blooms in summer. Large inflorescences sit high above the leaves and keep producing blooms for months. Tips often bloom multiple times without branching. Sets seed in large pods.

Fragrance

Light fragrance of coconut and suntan lotion with a floral undertone; must be sniffed close to detect.

Growth & Foliage

Very vigorous, fast grower with thick branching, reaching over 20 feet tall. Hearty and hardy.

Cultivation Tips

Easy to grow and one of the easiest plumerias; tolerates colder temperatures. Has resisted going fully dormant. Good filler for landscapes.

Provenance

Named many years ago by a University of Miami professor. Has been growing in South Florida for over 50 years.
