Description
A white plumeria with a small yellow throat and a green dot deep in the throat, bearing medium-sized star-shaped flowers with pointed petals in huge prolific bunches on long inflorescences. It is extremely fragrant, widely regarded as one of the most fragrant plumerias, and is a fast, vigorous grower with narrow, drooping foliage. Collected as a cutting from Puerto Rico in 1968-1969 by USDA researcher Dr. Franklin Martin and thought by UH researchers to possibly represent a species. It is rust-resistant but extremely susceptible to the plumeria borer. Reported unverified as a P. rubra x obtusa or P. caracasana hybrid.
Appearance
Medium-sized star-shaped white flowers (around 2.5-4 inches) with pointed petals and a yellow throat marked by a green dot deep inside. Petals are of soft texture typical of whites. The peduncle is long and greenish.
Bloom
Tall inflorescences carry many florets in huge bunches that continue to emerge over a long flowering season. Flowers hang in large, drooping clusters across the tree.
Fragrance
Very strong and intensely fragrant, described as jasmine, honeysuckle, or a jasmine-rose blend. Among the most fragrant plumerias.
Growth & Foliage
Fast-growing, medium-sized evergreen tree with a clean white-barked, non-suckering trunk and thick branching. Foliage is long, narrow, and naturally drooping, with a texture like P. rubra but leaves not as narrow as P. alba. Growth can be lanky or leggy. Rust-resistant and does not show rust on foliage.
Cultivation Tips
Cold tolerant and tough. Easy and fast to root, not sensitive to soil compaction. Susceptible to the plumeria borer. Makes a beautiful ornamental tree even when not in flower.
Provenance
Originated as a cutting brought from Puerto Rico in 1968-1969 by USDA researcher Dr. Franklin Martin, along with 'Delfel' and 'Mayaguez.' Jim Little collected cuttings from University of Hawaii plants. Included in Ms. Perez's DNA analyses.
