Description

My Valentine came from the late Jim Clark, given to him by Ampol Orrungroj and possibly originating in India. The flower is an unusual white with distinct to sometimes blotchy red or reddish-pink borders, overlapping petals, and a slight fold. Individual flowers can reach 5-6 inches, among the largest. Inflorescences are large and produce blooms for months, often on previous year's inflos. Petals are thick with a strong pink band on one side, visible from the front and back, an orange-yellow throat, and pink-tinted tight buds. Growth is compact, and the plant overwinters well, retaining leaves longer than most. Flowers do not last long after being picked and are unsuitable for leis. Sets seed.

Appearance

Unusual 4-5 inch (sometimes to 6 inch) white flowers with distinct or blotchy red to reddish-pink borders; thick, overlapping, slightly folded petals with a strong pink band on one side visible from front and back, orange-yellow throat, and pink-tinted tight buds. Saucer-like overlap.

Bloom

Outstanding bloomer with huge flower heads that continue blooming for months; large inflorescences, sometimes pendulous. Can bloom on previous year's inflorescence. Sets seed.

Fragrance

Sweet, light, perfume-like.

Growth & Foliage

Compact growth habit; not a tall grower; branches can seal over.

Cultivation Tips

Vigorous grower. Overwinters well, retaining leaves longer than most. Flowers do not last long after picking and are unsuitable for leis.
