Description

Nakama's Rainbow was grown from a seed by Cheryl Oshiro's grandmother in Hawaii, one of three seeds planted from a yellow plumeria. Cheryl's mother brought a cutting to Monterey Park in the 1960s and later to Montebello in 1978. Cheryl named it Nakama's Rainbow to honor her mother and aunts, whose maiden name was Nakama. The 3 inch flower is white with a red stripe on each petal edge shading to orange then yellow, with a yellow eye. It is lei-quality. Similar to but distinct from Mary Helen Rainbow. The plant went through trials and nearly died at one point; Cheryl distributed cuttings freely so it could spread worldwide. Some accounts note no scent, black tips, and that it is easy to root, while others report a strong plumeria fragrance.
