George Brown - Darwin Lord Mayor 1992-2002. George Brown was born on July 29, 1929 in Paddington, New South Wales. He was the first of four children born by a Scottish Scotsman and a Canadian French woman with Indian Sioux origins. Educated at Burnside Central, Sydney, at registration level, he then qualified for correspondence at the Ryde School of Control in greenkeeping. According to everyone, George Brown's youth was completed in difficult times. In a slight reflection on his youth, George said: "my father produced his rum, and rum cost less than milk, and my food for breakfast, old cookies, was dipped in rum rather than milk. I can remember my mother when I was about 12". George Brown's irrepressible character then had a series of colorful occupations including sailor, plant operator, Wooler, Drover's cook, common farmer, station attendant, kangaroo shooter, heartbreaker and butcher. He often told many of the experiences of his life based on his time spent in those different professions. George Brown arrived in Darwin in 1968. Fell in love with the city and, despite having a public service job in his state of New South Wales, sent a note to his then boss saying "I will not return". In
